THE Northwestern Medicine West Health AcceleratoR
Our Mission: Transforming the Future of Mental Health Care
We are on a mission to change the way mental health care is delivered in the United States. Recognizing the power of the Northwestern Medicine Collaborative Behavioral Health Program to transform lives with an even greater reach, we have established the Northwestern Medicine West Health Accelerator.
This innovative, nearly $9 million multi-year initiative aims to make mental health services more accessible by delivering care for anxiety and depression through all of Northwestern Medicine’s primary care practices. We are raising the standard of care for all adults through the major expansion of this evidence-based care model that can be readily implemented in a range of healthcare settings throughout the country.

The Landscape of Mental Health Care in the U.S.
59 million American adults have a mental illness.
Mental illnesses such as depression and anxiety are linked with negative physical health outcomes, including metabolic diseases, heart disease and diabetes. |
50% of American adults with a mental illness do not receive mental health treatment.
Demand for high-quality, treatments for common mental health conditions, including depression and anxiety, continues to grow in the U.S., leading to higher costs, limited access to care and many patients left untreated. |
70% of Americans prefer discussing mental and physical health with their primary care clinician during routine appointments.
Patients receiving integrated mental health care reach a diagnosis within six months 75% of the time, compared to less than 25% of patients in treatment as usual. |
In 2018, Northwestern Medicine created the Collaborative Behavioral Health Program, a program that integrates mental health care services into primary care practices using the Collaborative Care Model to support early intervention for the most common mild-to-moderate mental health diagnoses for adults of all ages. Since the Collaborative Behavioral Health Program began at Northwestern Medicine, thousands of patients have received treatment for mental health conditions that otherwise may have gone unaddressed.
Expanding Access to World-Class Services
The accelerator will optimize and expand access to the Collaborative Behavioral Health Program and create evidence-based tools, resources and capabilities that will facilitate its rapid and effective adoption across the country. The accelerator will optimize and integrate access to psychiatric care within primary care at Northwestern Medicine and transform mental health care in the Chicago area and across the United States.
